Persephone's Art

When Demeter and Persephone part
It isn't the end, it's only the start
Walk the perimeter then descend to the heart
Then return again, that's Persephone's art

Down, down, deep into the darkness
Mother weeps her crystalline tears
Daughter keeps her pomegranate promise
Now go to sleep and settle your fears

When Demeter and Persephone part
It isn't the end, it's only the start
Walk the perimeter then descend to the heart
Then return again, that's Persephone's art

Down, down, deep into the dark soil
Plant the seed in the warm womb of earth
You can reap the harvest of your hard toil
Such is the creed of death and rebirth

When Demeter and Persephone part
It isn't the end, it's only the start
Walk the perimeter then return to the start
Then return again, that's Persephone's art

Look, your daughter is dancing with her demons
Look, your mother has let her garden die
Look, the Lady is spinning with the seasons
Look inside if you wanna know why

When Demeter and Persephone part
It isn't the end, it's only the start
Walk the perimeter then descend to the heart
Then return again, that's Persephone's art

Let Her Go

First day of school, she's not your little baby girl
She's got a whole new world outside of you
You watch her walk away, you want her to run back to say
She'd rather stay home with you, but she's got other things to do

Let her go, or she'll be gone before you know
Let her know that you will always let her grow
Let her live, or you'll have nothing more to give
Let her see, let her be, set her free

Now she's a teen, that awkward age that's in between
She wants to show you she's not immature
You watch her fall in love, you know that she's not old enough
You're not above telling her. That does it, now she's really sure

Let her go, or she'll be gone before you know
Let her know that you will always let her grow
Let her live, or you'll have nothing more to give
Let her see, let her be, set her free

We both know you only want to keep her from pain
She needs your protection, you need her affection, is that so insane

She's on her own, you can't believe she's fully grown
But she will let you know when you forget
You watch her move away, she takes control of her own fate
She'll make mistakes, you can bet. But she'll survive if you will let, oh,

Let her go, or she'll be gone before you know
Let her know that you will always let her grow
Let her live, or you'll have nothing more to give
Let her see, let her be, set her free

Show Me

© 2000 Verlene Schermer/BMI

Don't tell me what you're feeling, you'd probably get it wrong
Don't tell me what you're thinking, you'll change your mind before too long
Don't tell me what you want to be, don't tell me what you want from me
Don't say you know, just take it slow, and show me

Don't write it in a love song, you may forget the tune
Don't make a proclamation, you could regret it all too soon
Don't tell me you'll be there for me, don't tell me how you'll care for me
Don't say you're mine, just take your time, and show me

Show me with your tender touch, show me with your gentle way
Show me by respecting me, protecting me from promises that break
If love is in your tone of voice, well that would be my only choice
Don't state your plan, just take my hand, and show me

Where Does Truth Hide

© 2000 Verlene Schermer/BMI

All these changes in the earth, they say the end is upon us
And there are zealots who say we'll be captured
And there are zealots who say we'll be raptured
And there are zealots who say we'll be fractured
Into a million mystic moonbeams, ah, but

Where does truth hide, and why does truth hide, and
When will truth ride in shining armor to our rescue, and
Where is truth now, and how can truth allow this, and
What is truth anyhow

All these changes in the earth, they say the end is upon us
And there are zealots who play to be winners
And there are zealots who pray for the sinners
And there are zealots who train the beginners
To be a million mystic moonbeams, ah, but

Where does truth hide, and why does truth hide, and
When will truth ride in shining armor to our rescue, and
Where is truth now, and how can truth allow this, and
What is truth anyhow

We all try to make our answers sound right, our solutions airtight
And we stand firm in spite of the doubting, and all the shouting
For the truth to come out from hiding, and

Where does truth hide, and why does truth hide, and
When will truth ride in shining armor to our rescue, and
Where is truth now, and how can truth allow this, and
What is truth anyhow

Going, Going, Gone

© 2000 Verlene Schermer/BMI

You've come so far, you've worked so hard
Have you discarded the questions:
What for? To what end? Do you know where you're going?
What for? To what end? Do you know where you're going?

Going, going, gone
Going, going, gone

You sing the words you've always heard
I know you're sure of your reasons
Look down, look deeper. Who can blame you for going?
Look back, look further. Who can blame you for going?

Going, going, gone
Going, going, gone

You've gone too far, you've worked too hard
This wasn't part of the deal
Look up, look forward. Do you see where you're going?
Look up, look higher. Can you see where you're going?

Going, going, gone
Going, going, gone

Isolation

© 2000 Verlene Schermer/BMI

In isolation, I burn for connection
Desire overcomes me to fit in
I reach my hand out, while fear of rejection
Makes me tremble and want to pull back in

Does the shock of contact really hurt so much
Is it worth the risk of shorting out
Will the life go out of me if I refuse to touch
Will the energy slowly slip away

In isolation I'm feeling surrounded
My senses are pinched to incapacity
I put my foot down, I need to be grounded

Then I tremble and fall down on my knees

Does the shock of contact really hurt so much
Is it worth the risk of shorting out
Will the life go out of me if I refuse to touch
Will the energy slowly slip away

I need recharging, I've got to plug
And feel the current flowing through my veins
To be a part of the big production
Then I tremble and feel the pain

'Cause the shock of contact really hurts so much
But it's worth the risk of shorting out
And the life flows into me when I begin to touch
The pain... the pain... the pain...

Blue on Blue

© 2000 Verlene Schermer/BMI

There is a blue that is deeper than the sea
An ancient inner ache that shakes the heart of me
There is a blue that is darker than the sky
That pulses in the night through every part of me

And I touch the formless void and watch the shaping of a world
As I bring some clarity to the confusion
And I see what I have made and say, "it is good, it is good"
Dark and deep, sky and sea, blue on blue

There is a blue that is bigger than the sea
Surrounds and covers me with womb rememberings
There is a blue that is brighter than the sky
It crowns and fills my mind with new rememberings

And I touch the formless void and watch the shaping of a world
As I bring some clarity to the confusion
And I see what I have made and say, "it is good, it is good"
Big and bright, sea and sky, blue on blue

There is a blue that is lonely like the sea
It closes in on me and my fragilities
There is a blue that is endless like the sky
Expanding in my mind with possibilities

And I touch the formless void and watch the shaping of a world
As I bring some clarity to the confusion
And I see what I have made and say, "it is good, it is good"
Day and night, dark and light, blue on blue

Winslow

Winslow was a writer, but not like you and me
We write down what has happened, he'd write down what will be
And when he finally realized how far his power was reachin'
He taught himself a lesson, no one else could teach him

He started writing ballads when he was yet unwise
He wrote a song of grieving, and then his dog met his demise
He wrote himself a love song and he met his precious lover
But when he wrote of heartache, she left him for another

One day he decided to make his power pay
Sat down to write a song in premeditated way
He wrote about a singer who dreamed of fame and glory
He wrote with special care, his fate lay in this story

The song would be successful, he knew he'd be a star
A song about his rising to the top of every chart
When he tried to write the last verse, it always left him crying
The only way the song could end was with him dying

He started on the song when he was only twenty-one
Now he has a wife, a teenage daughter and a son
And late nights in the study, one can faintly hear him crying
The song was never finished, he'll be forever trying

LeGuin

You've got a lot to tell me, I've got a lot to learn
You've got a way of telling that makes my spirit burn
In a world that parallels my own, I am not so alone
I am finding my way home

That's the way, LeGuin, go all the way, LeGuin
Tell me a story in printed imagery
And I'll tell you what it means to me, LeGuin
I'll tell you what it means to me

You've got a lot to show me, I've got a lot to see
You tell it like you know me, it's such a mystery
In your world, the perils are real, in a way I can feel
In a way I can't conceal

That's the way, LeGuin, go all the way, LeGuin
Tell me a story in printed imagery
And I'll tell you what it means to me, LeGuin
I'll tell you what it means to me

You've got another story, tonight will be sublime
I'll tell you in the morning if you got me one more time
In my world, a pair of old blue jeans is all the glamour that I need
When your words are touching me

That's the way, LeGuin, go all the way, LeGuin
Tell me a story in printed imagery
And I'll tell you what it means to me, LeGuin
I'll tell you what it means to me

Entranced

He's so handsome, she's so fair, blithe and happy, quite the pair
All I do is stand and stare, then grumble
Watch them dancing, stepping light, turning, spinning, pretty sight
I try too hard to get it right, then stumble

Life isn't fair, there is no square hole for this odd one
I'll always stand, hand on the grand entrance
Entranced, but never entering

Looking in I wait for you, nothing else for me to do
I'll wait until forever's through to know you
Snow is falling, blinds are drawn, still I hope that you'll catch on
'Cause there's so much inside I want to show you

Life isn't fair, there is no square hole for this odd one
I'll always stand, hand on the grand entrance
Entranced, but never entering

Entranced, like a statue I stand
Entranced, slab of granite I stand
Entranced, staring at you I stand
Entranced

Life isn't fair, there is no square hole for this odd one
I'll always stand, hand on the grand entrance
Entranced, but never entering

He's so handsome, she's so fair, blithe and happy, quite the pair
All I do is stand and stare, entranced, entranced, entranced

Singer and the Song

© 2000 Verlene Schermer/BMI

I see the world in certain light as if it isn't real
And long to get my hands around the substance and the feel
But then the cold reality leaves something to desire
So I look inside my dreaming to see the inner fire

I am creator and created, the singer and the song
I am elation and elated, I am
I am inventor and invented, the singer and the song
I am intention and intended, I am

I'm living on a high wire by balancing the soul
The spirit and the body are woven in the whole
My mind turns in upon itself, an Escheresque design
It's a tangled hierarchy for the diva and divine

I am creator and created, the singer and the song
I am elation and elated, I am
I am inventor and invented, the singer and the song
I am intention and intended, I am

It 's gonna take a quantum jump, a bump out of the system
It's gonna take a leap of faith, belief in latent wisdom

My mind turns in upon itself an Escher-esque design
It's a tangled hierarchy for the diva and divine

I am creator and created, the singer and the song
I am elation and elated, I am
I am inventor and invented, the singer and the song
I am intention and intended, I am

Labyrinth

Like a spider, I spin my sticky trap
To catch the thoughts as they fly unsuspecting
And like a weaver, I work each colored thread
Each bit of wool, old or new pieces of me

The pattern unfolds, simple, yet intricate
Inward and outward, internal labyrinth

A shadow painted in chiaroscuro light
Defines a shape: here am I in my extremes
A tune repeating in modulating keys
Will circle back to return to the center

The pattern unfolds, simple, yet intricate
Inward and outward, internal labyrinth
Internal labyrinth, eternal labyrinth

Make it Real

© 2000 Verlene Schermer/BMI
All Rights Reserved

Make it real, make it happen
Put your plan into action
Don't give in to a fraction of the fear you feel
Realize there's not limit
Just invest yourself in it
Don't forget for one minute you can make it real

There's a time for dreaming dreams
And thinking up some wild schemes
And there's a time for writing out
All that you'd like to be about
And there's a time for growing
For filling up and overflowing and then you

Make it real,
make it happen
Put your plan into action
Don't give in to a fraction of the fear you feel
Realize there's not limit
Just invest yourself in it
Don't forget for one minute you can make it real

How you spend your thinking hours
And how you use your dreaming power
Will go into the "coming true"
For all that you wish to be and do
And there's a time for growing
For gearing up and let-it-flowing and then you

Make it real,
make it happen
Put your plan into action
Don't give in to a fraction of the fear you feel
Realize there's not limit
Just invest yourself in it
Don't forget for one minute you can make it real

And when your dreams become your passion
That's when you're gonna have to

Make it real,
make it happen
Put your plan into action
Don't give in to a fraction of the fear you feel
Realize there's not limit
Just invest yourself in it
Don't forget for one minute you can make it real

Some things don't go according to the plan
And so you plan according to the way things go
And so you grow -- and so you flow -- and so you

Make it real,
make it happen
Put your plan into action
Don't give in to a fraction of the fear you feel
Realize there's not limit
Just invest yourself in it
Don't forget for one minute you can make it real
