I was keeping watch for your arrival
Held an ear out for your entrance line
It's your sense of humor that attracts me
Your light'ning wit will do it every time

You make me laugh
You make me love you
You make me laugh
You make me love you

Always the comedian at parties
The central charmer, flatterer and flirt
Where'd you learn to have such perfect timing
That mind of yours is constantly alert

You make me laugh
You make me love you
You make me laugh
You make me love you

I do believe I know each crack and crevice,
The subtle shades of blue and bitter gray.
And after scores of years of contemplation
I've learned to tell the seasons and the day
By watching how the sunlight pushes shadows
Across the dingy floor and up the wall,
Until they disappear and night has caught me
Straining to hear the voice of freedom call.

I crane my neck. Waiting, I pray, I listen
To hear her urgent whisper beckon me:
"Release yourself! You are but your own jailer."
The walls and ceiling vanish. I am free.
Then reds, greens, and colors long forgotten
Rush here and there and leave me nearly blind.
While minty cool and salty sea invite me
To feel the vivid beauty of my mind.

The years fall off like scales from my body.
The energy of youth burns in my core.
I rise to find I am no longer shackled.
I take a step, spread my wings and soar --
A Pegasus, born of myth and fancy --
In surrealistic skies of rose and cream.
A piper's melody drifts by, a ghostly
Tune left over from some other dream.

Then fireworks explode and light the corners,
Revealing gross distortions in the glare.
While in the height of freedom, I am frightened
And longing for the safe return to where
The sunlight pushes shadows through the seasons
Across the floor and up the wall. And then,
They disappear and darkness finds me straining
To hear that voice seduce me once again.

Letters in a shoebox
Letters in a shoebox
Letters in a shoebox
Reminding me

Antoinette is getting her head together
Katie and her backpack hitch a ride
Jerry found a new life up in the mountains
Fond memories that stir me up inside

Letters in a shoebox
Letters in a shoebox
Letters in a shoebox
Reminding me

Pictures of the rally they held at Berkeley
A postcard from the surf at Santa Cruz
Notes that say "We sure wish that you could be here"
Fond memories I know I'll never lose

Letters in a shoebox
Letters in a shoebox
Letters in a shoebox
Reminding me

All alone and staring into the silence
A single light falls on the faded wall
Smiling as the images dance before me
If I had no memories I'd have no life at all

Letters in a shoebox
Letters in a shoebox
Letters in a shoebox
Reminding me
