The Sing-Along Harper

This book will give you tools to play along with singers and other instrumentalists without needing to read and memorize music! The concept is the same as for learning folk guitar -- they only need to learn some chords and a few strumming or fingerpicking patterns, and away they go! So, why should guitar players get all the fun? Here at last is an approach to playing folk harp that is truly a folk style of learning. Although all the songs used for examples and practice in this book are from American and Celtic folk music, you can apply this to modern popular music as well. The book includes how to figure out the keys and lever settings for songs, and what to do about chords that are not "within the key." It also includes a fingerpicking "library" with 80 patterns in four different time signatures. There are 20 fun folk songs with lyrics and chords, not a single note to read. The book comes with a companion CD of all 20 songs to rehearse along with. Verlene sings and plays her Celtic harp in a variety of styles to give you the sense of playing along with other musicians and singers. Then you can take these fingerpicking patterns, add your own if you like, and bring your harp to the next sing-along or jam session in your own community! The songs in the book include: The Water is Wide; Down the River; Go Down Moses; Mockingbird Song; Fair and Tender Ladies; Barbara Allen; Wade in the Water; America, the Beautiful; Streets of Laredo; Star of County Down; Scarborough Fair; Midnight Special; Oh Danny Boy; Amazing Grace; Wayfaring Stranger; Cockles and Mussels; Water Come a Me Eye; Cat Came Back; Old Joe Clark; and John Henry. 62 pages ($25.00 for book/cd)

Traditional Christmas Tunes with a Twist

This is the third book in the "Tunes with a Twist" series. The “twist” is the jazzy approach in the arrangements of these tunes that we usually hear with traditional chords and rhythms.  The arrangements in this book are for lever harp, but can be played just as easily on pedal harp or piano.  Most of the tunes can be played on a lever harp with only F and C levers, but for one tune, you will also need a G# and for another, you’ll also need a Bb for a lever slide -- or you can simply leave it out.  Each arrangement uses either jazzy chords or jazzy rhythms or both.  Chords are also given for guitar or any other chording instrument. Songs:  Away in a Manger; The First Noel; God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen; The Holly and the Ivy; I Saw Three Ships; It Came Upon a Midnight Clear; Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring; Jingle Bells; O Christmas Tree; and Silent Night.  25 pages ($10.00)

Cool Chords and Groovy Rhythms

Arranging for Lever Harp in Modern Styles

This book covers the cool chords that go "beyond and between" the triads used in traditional styles of music, and modern rhythms that "groove". The minimal chord in jazz is a chord made of four tones - usually a seventh chord, such as Cmaj7, Dm7, and G7. These are used extensively in pop as well. But beyond the 7's are 9's, 11's, sus4's and 13's that can add even more of a modern jazzy sound to any melody. The rhythms used in modern styles vary from syncopated rhythms to "swing eighths" to a rockin' "four on the floor". Jazz introduces the element of swing, and the Brazilian influence within the jazz genre brings us straight eighths with lots of syncopation. Exercises, examples, and assignments are given for each element presented in order to provide the tools for making modern-sounding arrangements using popular songs, traditional tunes, or your own compositions. 80 pages.   ($20.00)

Traditional Tunes with a Twist

The "twist" is the jazzy approach in the arrangements of these tunes that are usually played with traditional chords and rhythms. The arrangements in this book are for lever harp, but can be played just as easily on piano. Most of the tunes can be played on a lever harp with only the F and C levers, but for one tune you will also need a G-sharp. Each arrangement begins more simply and less jazzy and then evolves into a more modern sound with jazzy chords, jazzy rhythms, or both. As one of Verlene's students put it, "these are not the chords your ancestors used!" Chord names are also given for guitar or any other chording instrument. Songs are: Greensleeves Swing, House of the Rising Sun, Mo Ghile Mear, Mockingbird Song, Morrison's Jig, Motherless Child, Oh Susannah, Si Bheag Si Mhor, Silent "Jazzy" Night, Suo-gan (Lullaby), Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, and The Water is Wide. 26 pages.  ($10.00)

Verlene's Cross-Strung Harp Book

This book for cross-strung harp includes four harp solos, three for harp and vocal, and two for harp and flute or any other melody instrument.   The vocal pieces can also be played with a melody instrument.  The styles range from Renaissance and Baroque, to modern jazzy original compositions.  There are fingering suggestions, but they are purposefully sparse, so that you won't become bogged down by them.  You can add fingerings using the suggested ones, and copying them to similar passages, or you can choose to put in alternate fingering of your own.   The last page is an excerpt from the upcoming book "Jazz on a Cross-Strung Harp" --- a how-to book for arranging and playing jazz on the cross-strung.  Pieces include: Alman, Willow Song, Spagnoletta, Bach Prelude No. 9, Siciliano, Now & Then, Two-D Imagery, and Watch Your Blues Fade Away.  25 pages.  ($10.00)

Vocal Mechanics: A Look Under the Hood
How the voice works, how to maintain the machine and improve performance
This book has evolved from a popular workshop presented by Verlene Schermer, and also from over 30 years of teaching private voice in the San Francisco Bay Area. Verlene’s presentation style both in her workshops and lessons and in this book is comfortable and conversational. This makes learning vocal concepts fun, interesting, and easier than many people think it could be!  The whimsical graphics in the book, which were drawn by Verlene along with the help of her computer, are useful aids for understanding the physiology, and for applying the visualizations.  This book is not meant to replace the voice teacher, but to aid those who are either not near enough to a voice teacher for regular lessons, or for those who would like a supplementary book with exercises.  The book comes with a CD of the vocal warm up exercises presented in the book. A Dozen Dowland Songs & Ayres
for voice and lever harp
This book contains twelve of the most lever-harp-friendly pieces from the three books of Dowland’s Songs & Ayres originally transcribed for voice and lute. The harp arrangements in this book, which are intermediate to advanced level with several lever changes in most of the pieces, were transcribed from the original lute tablature. Verlene has also added introductions, interludes and endings that incorporate the melody and accompaniment on solo harp. Words to all verses are given so that the melodies can be sung by the harpist or another singer, or they can also be played on a melody instrument. The melodies fit well on flute, violin or recorder, but could also be played by a second fully levered harp. A companion CD is available with all songs played on lever harp and sung by Verlene. Songs include: Awake, Sweet Love; Behold A Wonder Here; Can She Excuse My Wrongs; Come Again; Fine Knacks for Ladies; Flow My Tears; If My Complaints; Now, O Now I Needs Must Part; Shall I Sue; Sleep, Wayward Thoughts; Time Stands Still; White as Lilies Was Her Face. 34 pages ($20.00 for book and CD, $15.00 for book alone)

The arrangements in this book are for beginning to intermediate players on 34 – 36 string lever harp in keys from one flat to four sharps. Eleven out of the sixteen pieces can be played on a lever harp with only C and F levers. The companion CD includes all the songs in the book, in the order they appear in the book, so if you like, you can put the CD on and play along from page one to the end.  The arrangements are among those that harpist Barbara Ellen Schilling plays in hospitals, hospice and senior centers in Southern California.  Complete songlist: Before Dawn; Bonny Portmore; The Christ Child’s Lullaby; The Cradle Song; Danny Boy; Greensleeves; The Grenadier and the Lady; Loch Lomond; Mrs. Jamison’s Favourite; The Recollection of the Day; Scarborough Fair; Slumbering Minstrel; Tramps and Hawkers; The Water at Twilight; The Water is Wide; Westering Home. 48 pages (book/CD $22.00)

Tunes We Play Together (Duets, Trios, and Ensemble Music)

As one of the primary ensemble leaders for Harpers Hall, Verlene has had many years of experience leading a multi-level harp ensemble and has arranged several pieces for the Harpers Hall Ensemble in two or three parts. This book includes eight of her arrangements – four Christmas pieces, two traditional Celtic and two classical. Harp one is usually the easiest part, with harp two at intermediate level and harp three more advanced. The two classical pieces don’t follow this division of levels, but both are at intermediate to advanced intermediate level.  She has included suggestions on how to use the book with either two or three harps, or full harp ensembles.  Many of the three part pieces can also be played as a duet or solo.  Complete songlist: Carol of the Bells, Flower Duet, Glass of Beer/Burning of the Piper’s Hut, Gymnopedie #1, The Holly and the Ivy, Silent Night, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, and Willafjord. 30 pages.
